Would you act the same if I told you I broke my leg versus if I had a mental breakdown?

Maybe. Maybe not. The answer is not important.

What matters is that we have conversations about the stigma around mental health. What matters is that we learn how to be more supportive towards others and ourselves who are living with depression and anxiety. Why don’t we treat these chemical imbalances as the actual medical conditions that they are?

I’ve broken my leg and I’ve dealt with panic attacks and depression. They both were serious medical issues that needed to be addressed, but received very different responses from the medical system and from the world around me. Take a minute this month to take stock of the ways you approach mental illness, how you support others, and how you support yourself.
