how to podcast

Wondering how podcasts are made?

You are reading the right post.

I’ve had a number of folks ask in the past few months about how to start a podcast… so many that I figured I would just, well, podcast about it.

As many of you know, I started my podcast on accident. You’ll have to listen to this week’s episode to find out more.

Some quick tips:

  • Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Just show up and do the work. Learn as you go. You are going to mess up, so don’t let the fear of failure keep you from doing the work.
  • Get an accountability buddy. Or audience. If you let your community know that you would start making a weekly podcast, you’d have that much more incentive to do it. Social desirability bias works.
  • Automate the process. Schedule your content ahead of time so you have one less hurdle to get over each week (or day or month or whatever.)
  • Make a podcast about something that you love. If I podcasted about car mechanics or organic chemistry, I would have given up long, long ago.

The key? Just show up. Start, knowing that you won’t be perfect.

HINT: That advice would work for most creative endeavors. Or any endeavor, really. Want to go on a date with someone? Start, knowing that you won’t be perfect. Want to apply for your dream job? Start, knowing that you won’t be perfect. Want to have a difficult conversation with your family? Start, knowing that you won’t be perfect. See the theme?

(Completely don’t care at all about podcasting? You are in luck. I have 61 other episodes for you to choose from.)

Show up this week. You can do it, my friends.
