action: the ultimate life-hack

Want to know my best life hack? Action.

That’s it. Just action. When something feels off, stagnant, or just generally not working, I just spin into action.

It’s easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than it is to think your way into a new way of acting.

Okay, but how? How do you know what action to take?

  • Fake it till you make it. Write down the kinds of actions that the kind of person you want to be would take. Do they hike? Go to bed early? Cook dinner for people? Write them down and then just start doing them. That’s all.
  • No matter what happens, you’ll have a confidence boost from the sheer experience of having done SOMETHING. Remember, life is an experiment. A scientist doesn’t just stare at paper all day, she acts.
  • Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. You are going to mess some things up, but perfection is overrated. Who are you actually trying to please, anyway? Where did these standards come from?

The goal of all of this action is that eventually, by acting, you become the thing you desire. You use your body to do, and in that process, forge new mental pathways and thoughts about being. Most excitingly, you’ll surprise yourself with your innate capacity.

But here’s the deal — action is just one way to look at it. Next week, I’ll be talking about my other life-hack, action’s opposite: belief.

So pick a couple of actions to try out this week. What do you have to lose?
